I got the 25th addition of Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas cd's for Christmas from my oldest son, wife and family and I just love them. I have them in the car and in the computer. I never tire of listening to their music. It doesn't matter to me that it is Christmas music and it is February. I love "The Little Drummer Boy" so much I play it a great deal. But I love their other music as well.

Fog

Another foggy morning. It is really a good sign though because it means more snow is melting. We had 6-7" of snow a couple weeks ago. We have been having above normal temperatures now for a couple weeks and the snow has really gone down. The roads are good and you can get around good. It has been the best winter I can ever remember. I have hardly had to use my shovel at all, just broom away a little flurry by the doors.

This winter is going to go down in history for us here in cold snowy Iowa. We have only had two real snowfalls. In December, we got 6" which all melted away. A week or two ago we got 6" which is melting now. All week we are going to be above freezing. The weatherman says all the snow should be gone by the end of the week. It is almost unbelievable. I don't remember in my lifetime, a winter like this, but we love it.

Senior Fun

Our local bank plans the best trips for Seniors and they treat you like royalty on the trips. Most are day trips and very inexpensive as they are all inclusive, tips, meals, etc. They give you treats along the way and visit with you as you travel back and forth. We went to a Theater to see a play and it was so good we all laughed and laughed. We got home in good time too and most of the snow and ice had melted and dried up on the parking lot where the bus dropped us off. That was very nice. I took some time to pick up a few groceries and was home in time to see a new program "Tough" with Kiefer Sutherland. I like it. I know I will watch it again.

Are you hungry for cake but don't want to bake a whole big cake? Well, I got this recipe today for a small easy cake. It is just enough to fill your desire for some cake and yet not leave you with a whole lot to finish eating.

3, 2, 1 CAKE
These individual little cakes are amazing and ready to eat in one minute! They are perfect
for whenever you feel like a treat without all the fat and calories that cake can have. Genius idea!

INGREDIENTS:
1 box Angel Food Cake Mix
1 box Cake Mix - Any Flavor
2 Tbsp Water
Makes 1 serving.

DIRECTIONS:
In a ziploc bag, combine the two cake mixes together and mix well. For each individual cake serving, take out 3 Tablespoons of the cake mix combination and mix it with 2 Tablespoons of water in a small microwave-safe container. Microwave on high for 1 minute, and you have
your own instant individual little cake!

KEEP remaining cake mixture stored in the ziploc bag and use whenever you feel like a treat! You can top each cake with a dollop of fat free whipped topping and/or some fresh fruit.

Helpful Tips:
This recipe is called 3, 2, 1 Cake because all you need to remember is
"3 tablespoons mix, 2 tablespoons water, 1 minute in the microwave!"

TRY various flavors of cake mix like carrot, red velvet, pineapple, lemon, orange, etc. Just remember that one of the mixes has to be the angel food mix; the other is your choice.
The flavor possibilities are endless!

NOTES:
The best thing is, you open both cake mixes into a gallon storage bag, one that 'zip locks' or 'self-seals', or a container that seals tightly, shake the two cake mixes to blend and then make the recipe. Storage of mix is simple, put it on a shelf. No need to refrigerate, since the mix is dry. Always remember, that one of the cake mixes MUST be Angel Food. The other can be any flavor. The Angel Food is the cake mix that has the egg whites in it. So, if, anyone is allergic to egg whites, DO NOT serve this recipe.

Chocolate Chunk Cookies

There is just one thing wrong with chocolate chunk cookies and that is that you just can't resist them. You want to get a hot cup of coffee or tea and sit down and chow down on a couple of those cookies. When they come out of the oven, they are absolutely irresistible. If you can resist a warm chocolate chunk cookie, then you are a lot stronger than I am. I only bake a few at a time because they would disappear just as fast if I made twice as many at one time :0)

It is time for my brother-in-law's birthday again. They always seem to find the funniest caps and hats for my husband so it is our turn to shop for a hat.

There is nothing like a good old tried and tested recipe to get your mouth watering. I made Mexican Lasagna last night. I like to let it sit overnight and the juices soak into the tortillas that you use in it. It turns out just as if you had used lasagna noodles. It is delicious. I can smell it every time I open the refrigerator and it smells wonderful. It will be even better when I bake it and at the last minute or so add a covering of shredded cheese to melt slightly before serving. Yum!

I just love all the CSI shows. Tonight is CSI New York. Gary Sinise is a very special person. He does a lot for the servicemen. He entertains overseas. I admire him for his personal efforts to help servicemen. I also enjoy the show very much. I love CSI Miami, as well and also the regular CSI program. A Person of Interest is a new show that I also love to watch.

Winter?

You almost have to pinch yourself to see if you are dreaming. We live in Iowa, the land of snow and ice and high winds in the winter. Lots of shoveling, snow moving, and freezing weather. But so far this weather is almost like early Spring. We have no snow at all and the temperatures have been in the 40's a great deal of the time. It is already 31 degrees and headed for the 40's again. Believe me, I am not complaining. It means that after this week, we will have about 2 1/2 months of winter behind us and without snow and below zero temperatures, we absolutely love it. I know it's bad for the snowmobilers and people who move snow are hurting for income but we just have to enjoy it while we can because we know it isn't going to last until Spring.

Mom and her Kids

I think this is a really good picture of my granddaughter-in-law with the children. The little boys are a barrel of fun.

They are constantly on the run. They love to play with their cousins who are the same age as they are. It is quite noisy when you get them altogether but it is so neat to see them playing together very well. They grow up so quickly, too quickly. Pictures are a great way to remember them at this age.

We went out for supper at a big Mexican restaurant tonight. The little 2 year old could really put away the chips and salsa. I couldn't get over how much he ate. They got them macaroni and cheese and applesauce too. He's a big eater for such a little guy. Think he will be tall like his 6'3" dad as he is already taller for his age and very muscular, not fat. The 4 year old is very vocal and loud and says just what she thinks and it can be both embarrassing and amusing.

Is This Really Winter?

Here it is December 27 and we don't have any snow. Believe me, I am not complaining and I wish it could stay this way all winter. Places like Texas are getting snow that never get snow and they can have our share as far as I am concerned. We only have had to scoop a little snow once and now it is all melted away. With November and December being so good that cuts 2 months off our long winters. I sure hope we don't get a lot of snow after the New Year.

Busy Weekend

This is going to be a busy weekend. My oldest son and family are coming up tomorrow. We are planning on visiting and then in the afternoon, meeting up with his mother-in-law at a restaurant and having a good visit there. Our church is having a candlelight service tomorrow night, Christmas Eve, at 5 pm so that will work out well. We will be eating in the same town as church and it will be fun to have a good visit with everyone.

My daughters have kept me in all kinds of Christmas goodies. They love to bake for their families and pass along samples of cookies and candies from time to time. It is a lot of fun to receive these as I just do not do the Christmas baking like I used to. I have passed that on down to the next generation and it is really neat to enjoy these things without all the work. It is a time of feasting on goodies and then after New Years, trying to take off the pounds you have gained. But what a delightful way to gain those pounds and it is only once a year.

It is a lot of fun having my daughter living right here in town. I had made a delicious batch of chili and wanted to take her some. She loved it and had it for her lunch. Then she sent home something for me to have for supper that smells wonderful. I am anxious to try it tonight. She also sent home some wonderful cookies her husband made and banana muffins. What a great deal! I look forward to more good stuff like this now that she lives here.

Hats are back in style again. I see more women wearing Ladies Hats, not only in church but out shopping, going to work and many other places. Easy Songs on the Guitar

Some time ago my husband wanted to get a guitar and see if he could learn to play it. So I got him a guitar for Christmas. He tried to play some easy songs on the guitar but he failed miserably and was very sad that he could not learn to play his guitar. Today I was invited to a Christmas brunch at one of the local churches. There was a lady there playing the piano that I have known for years. I was so glad to see her. The woman who played the cow bells did an excellent job of it. She has been playing the bells for 20 years and giving her testimony. It was a very nice Christian program. The bunch was delicious too.

Everyone loves chocolate. I know I certainly do. The little neighbor girls came around last month selling frozen cookies that are ready to bake. I bought a box and put them in the freezer. Last night I decided it was time to get them out and bake a couple dozen. They are chocolate chunk cookies and are just delicious. They are especially good when they are hot from the oven. Yum!

Snow for Christmas

In our part of the country, people love to see a White Christmas. We didn't have any snow in November but Saturday we really got a lot. I think it is here to stay now. It rained first. That caused ice to form on everything. Then it snowed somewhere between 5-8 inches and everything is white now. You have to be careful walking because there is ice along with the snow.

Branson, Missouri

I just got back from 5 days traveling to Branson and spending 3 days seeing wonderful shows. We also saw so many beautiful Christmas lights. It is almost impossible to describe it all. We saw the Hughes Brothers the first day. What a wonderful Christian family. There are 4 brother and their 4 beautiful wives who sing and dance and they also have their children in the show. We certainly enjoyed every minutes of this show. They witnessed of their love of Jesus and did not pull any punches with the audience. You had no doubts of how strong their belief is in Jesus and God. It was just wonderful.

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I spent it with my oldest son and daughter-in-law, her whole family and extended family and their 4 children, my grandchildren. We had wonderful turkey and gravy and all the usual and unusual salads. There was such a variety to cookies and specially made candies and at least 6 different pies. We played the most fun game with almost everyone playing and it took 5 tables of 4 people each playing. We won more and more candy of all sorts or lost some depending on how your game went. They took lots of silly pictures and it was a laugh a minute. I have lots to be thankful for.

Sad Holidays

I lost my husband on September 8. He missed his birthday on September 30. Then he missed our 61st anniversary which would have been October 8. Now he will not be here for Thanksgiving. But I think the hardest will be Christmas without him. I am dreading Christmas this year. I know we celebrate Jesus Birthday and Jesus is the Reason for the Season, but that does not help the big hole my husband left in my home and heart. It is hard to explain to anyone just how empty the house is or how lonely it is. I am so glad he is in Heaven as he is going to have the best Christmas ever and he is already having a wonderful time with his Savior, Jesus Christ and Father God and our two children who went on before him. He has so many brothers and sisters there too in Heaven. Some were born before him and died and he never got to meet them in his lifetime. But now I know he is with them all.

I took my brother out to lunch yesterday. It was his 75th birthday. We went to a great Chinese restaurant. I thought the food was absolutely delicious. They say if a person has one good friend they are lucky indeed. I guess I am not only lucky, but blessed as well. Good friends came over last night and took me out for a great Mexican supper. The restaurant was very busy which was very good as they are rather new in town. It seems in this little town it is hard to get a good restaurant going. People must not like to change. I love to try out new places and new dishes. Sometimes they are delicious and sometimes, not so good but I enjoy taking a chance for a change instead of eating the same old things.

New Baby

We are expecting a new baby on November 22. It will be my 12th great grandchild. No, we don't know if it is a girl or a boy. The parents want to be surprised. There are few surprises in life and this can be one of them. I agree. We are all betting on a boy though but we could be surprised there too. Is Winter Close?

They had snow out west and I heard they even had some in Texas, which I think is really unusual. Now the east coast is under winter storm watches and warnings. They say they are in for a great deal of heavy wet snow. That is really bad this time of the year because it usually brings down a lot of trees and lines and people find themselves without heat and lights. It was only 20 degrees this morning and I would sure hate to be without heat. When there is a big storm that covers many heavy populated states, it is really bad because so many people are affected. I sure wish them the best and hope it isn't as bad as they say it will be.

Yesterday was a fun day. My daughter drove over to spend the day with me and we had a great time. She lives about 2 hours away so it is quite a drive both ways. We went out for lunch to one of our favorite places and sat and visited. Then we went to several huge stores and did a lot of looking and a little shopping. We also visited the big Goodwill store and she got a bunch of cute Halloween pins to wear on her uniform. It was a great day.

New Homes

Two of our children and one grandchild all have purchased new homes in the past few months. Several have changed to better jobs too. That is a blessing. It is really neat to buy a brand new house and take part in picking out what goes into it. The flooring, counter tops, and many other things can be chosen before the house is completed. Our son is having his basement completely done and I am anxious to make a trip over to see it sometime before the snow starts flying.

Halloween

It will not be long and Halloween will be here. We do not get many kids coming to the door where we live, but it is fun to see those that do. Our neighbors have 4 and there are 2 next to them so we should have a few kids. I like to see their costumes. I hope it is good weather for them. Some years it has rained and others it has snowed. It would be good if it was nice weather for a change. The kids have a lot of fun dressing up.

Fun Weekend

it was a beautiful Fall weekend and I took advantage of it. I went down to my 60th class reunion in my old home town. I got to ride the Scenic Empress up and down the Iowa River and the weather could not have been more perfect. It was about an hour and a half ride and the trees were beautiful. They said it was just about the most perfect day they had so far this year. It was about 80 most of the time but there was a very nice breeze. A good time was had by all.

I Miss Holly

Holly was the best little dog we ever had. She was a Boston Terrier but she had altogether different facial markers than most Boston Terriers.

As you can see, she had an all white face with a little black circle on her forehead. She also had one brown and one blue eye which was quite unusual. But she was very smart. I got a book from the Library on training dogs and everything I taught her, she learned immediately. She loved to dance for her food. And if I opened the door to her kennel cab, she went in without asking her to. We had to put her to sleep August 25 due to health problems and the house isn't the same without her.

Moving Day

Moving Day was Saturday and our daughter and her husband got moved into their brand new house right here in our town. That is really nice. It is so handy for both of us go back and forth between homes. Our granddaughter and family also moved here a couple of weeks ago and that makes it doubly nice. It was a beautiful sunny day for moving and the men didn't have to wear heavy jackets and could be outside without being cold. We had had some cold days and this is one of them. It is only 53 degrees and now it is raining lightly. BRRRR

Relocating

Our son and his wife and family have relocated, along with new jobs further south. He always wanted to move farther south where it is warmer and I think he has also found they have lots more rain than we do up here in Northern Iowa. They bought a beautiful home and we were privileged to go visit there last month.

It is so nice to see your children doing better than you did when you were their age. I love my 3 bedroom mobilehome though and have plenty of room for my computer room.

My husband has been in the hospital all week. He was passing a great deal of blood. His blood count was getting low also. They put him through many tests, telling us the worst. Then he had a procedure this morning that contradicted everything they told us and we got a good report. That was a big relief. He has one more hurdle to cross and we are trusting God for another good report on any biopsies he has tomorrow or Monday.

I had never heard of a CT uralscan until last Friday, a couple days ago. My husband is scheduled for one on Thursday. That is because he has been passing blood clots. This is nothing to mess with and means some sort of serious condition. However, it go so bad this morning that he had a lot of back pain and lower abdominal pain and 2 blood clots. Once the clots were out he felt so much better. He has been passing clots for about 2 weeks but only 1 the first week and then last week they began to come every day until yesterday, it was every time he went to the bathroom. I talked to the hospital and they said to come to ER. However, now the blood clots have stopped, his back is better and we wonder if he was passing kidney stones or a kidney stone.

We were at the hospital Clinic today when all of a sudden all the lights went out. It was pitch black in the doctor's room we were in. They said all the lights went out in half the town. Surgery was going on and they had to finish by flash light. It was off about 15 minutes. That is when the cell phone really came in handy. By turning it on, we were able to see to get down the hall to the restrooms, etc. It was a new experience, that is for sure.

This morning I went to take Shi Shi outside and put some things in the recyclables. The kids and my husband were out and I was home alone. When I tried to get back into the house, the door would not open. I was really tempted to call the police because I think they help in situations like this. The only problem was that I did not have my phone with me to call the police even if I wanted to. I was really upset and cold. Oh, did I forget to mention it was January and 23 degrees outside? Shi Shi was shivering but at least he had fur. I can see my television through the window and as I am kicking the door, I am looking at ?The Golden Girls? on Direct Star TV. I must explain something. The door was not locked. During the winter months, the door expands I guess and when it slams shut, it stays shut. After about 15 minutes, which felt like an hour, the door finally gave in and we quickly ran inside to warm up.

Nerve Pain

I do not think there is anything any worse than nerve pain. My husband had to have an x-ray of his neck and an MRI this week. It would appear he will probably have to have surgery as a vertebrae and a spur are pressing on his spinal column. It is causing him a great deal of pain from his neck all the way half way down his back. They prescribed some pills and a soft collar he has to wear all the time except at night. The collar helps quite a bit but not enough. Will be happy to find out what the MRI says and what has to be done next.

I found the best frozen fish fillets. You pop them in the oven for 23 minutes, turning them once and they are nice and crisp and brown. Put them on a bun with tartar sauce and they make the best fish sandwich you could wish for. I think that is what we are going to have for supper tonight. That and a nice dish of cold sliced peaches and we're all set with cold milk.

You really get attached to your pets. They become almost like family members. Our little Holly followed me around the house wherever I went and slept by the computer. They say we are in for some stormy weather today. We are in a rather severe watch but hope we don't have anything but rain. Last weekend a storm blew through with 60 MPH winds and hail in some places too. Many towns lost a great many big trees. It pretty much missed us but we got a 1/4 inch of rain. We really needed the rain. Traveling this weekend, we saw many branches broken off and trees down. On the news they showed a really big tree that fell right on someone's home. That is bad when that happens. I guess one place had hail the size of baseballs. Now that is big and does a lot of damage.

It is always a good idea to have regular checkups with your doctor. I know at one appointment, I was surprised to learn that I had high blood pressure. Over the years, it has gone up and down and have had to change medications. One medication gave me a tickle in my throat and I was always coughing. Tonight we went out to one of our favorite restaurants. They have TexMex on Thursday nights. It was just packed out tonight. I didn't think we were going to get a table at first. It is very popular any night of the week. It is in a small town of about 3,000 I would guess and the people really support the restaurant. That is because their food is always good. Last week we went down on Wednesday to their 3 meat buffet and it was delicious.

We are having unusually hot weather. It has been nearly or at 100 for two days. Today it is down to 82 and the wind has died down a lot. Everyone wants warm summer weather but it can get too hot. Our kids have really gone green crazy. I don't think that's a bad thing, it's just kind of funny that a 10 and 12 year old know way more than two adults about why it's important to be environmentally conscious. I even had to get them to explain what a carbon footprint is and why it's important to lessen our household's. When you make a trip to the Black hills of South Dakota, you can visit Dinosaur Park. This was my favorite dinosaur many years ago when we made that trip.

Now they have added more and it is still fun to see them. Our grandsons took this picture on their trip a couple weeks ago. It is so much easier now to get there by Freeway. I just love the beautiful badlands and I will never forget Mt. Rushmore. I would like to make that trip again some day. It is truly a part of America the Beautiful.

Fun on the Holiday Weekend

We attended church on Sunday and honored our living Veterans as well as those who have passed on before. Then Monday we were invited out to our grandson's acreage for a big BBQ. We had never been there yet so it was neat to see all their buildings, chickens and big home. The kids had a great time playing outside as the sun came out and it was very windy so wasn't really terribly hot.

This was only one of the activities they had for the great grandkids. They also had a water spray to play in and a huge swing set. We all had lots of wonderful food and a good time was had by all.
